The defeat of the Ottoman Turks at the gates of Vienna in 1683 allowed Western Europeans to expand their enslavement efforts into Africa without fear of retaliation. Following the "Glorious Revolution" of 1688, the merchant class clipped the wings of the British monarch and opened the slave trade to private interests. This shift necessitated the creation of "doctrines of whiteness" to justify the exploitation of labor.
