About this episode

Louise Miller identifies the critical gap between professional networking and revenue generation for solo business owners. The Only Networking community serves as a case study for why a ninety-minute meeting actually requires a two-and-a-half-hour commitment to be effective. Miller argues that without dedicated time for LinkedIn outreach and note organization, these social interactions fail to convert into sustainable business growth.

Strategic diary management involves creating a protective bubble around events to handle administrative follow-up and offer creation. One prolific networker found her calendar saturated with coffee chats, leaving zero capacity for developing service offers or financial products. Miller suggests that while social events provide personal fulfillment, they must be balanced against the focused work required for long-term profitability. Listeners can support these productivity insights through the Buy Me A Coffee platform or by joining the official mailing list for ongoing time management strategies.

Miller shares the realization that being busy is often a defense mechanism against the harder work of selling. The session highlights how a single hour of post-meeting follow-up can salvage a wasted week of networking. Louise Miller encourages listeners to leave a review to help other overwhelmed entrepreneurs find these sustainable habits.

CHAPTER 02 / 4 Discussion

Only Networking Community and Post-Meeting Follow-Up Strategy

Effective diary management requires allocating specific time for the administrative tasks that follow professional networking events. Experience with the Only Networking community demonstrates that a 90-minute meeting often requires an additional hour for note organization and LinkedIn outreach. Creating a protective bubble of time before and after events prevents stress and ensures that relationship-building efforts are not wasted.

01:30 Diary management. It's not the most exciting of subjects but get it wrong and it can lead to all kinds of kerfuffle, so for example have you ever realised that you didn't allow yourself enough time to get something done and then spent the rest of day or week or month frantically trying to catch up with yourself? So I think that's something we can all relate to and today i'm going to share one simple thing that we could all be doing, to help guard against that sort of kerfuffle. So I've been a member of the Only Networking community for a few years now and I still remember going along to my first online meeting and as a shy introvert I was slightly nervous but putting my best foot forward and ready to meet a bunch of new people! And the meeting lasted 90 minutes but that wasn't the end of the story because once the call was over

02:16 I needed more time and for that very first meeting because i didn't know anyone, I actually needed another hour to sort out my notes connect with people on LinkedIn and send a handful of personal messages. So thankfully I didn't have anything else booked into my diary after the meeting so I was able to focus on those tasks straight away whilst things were fresh in my mind but imagine if my diary had been full-to-bursting with back-to-back calls and an unrealistically long list of things I'd wanted to get done that day I would have spent the rest of that day, perhaps even the rest of the week fretting and stressing about when on earth i was going to get the time to do the follow-up from that networking meeting. And eventually I might well have told myself well it's too late now, I might as well not bother which would have made going to that meeting in the first place a questionable use of my precious time after all building relationships are genuine takes more than just showing up to a meeting once a month doesn't it? So if i'm going to invest time and money in being part of a networking community i want to do it properly or what's the point

03:14 And whilst I'm at it, I actually want to protect time before each meeting too so that i can print the attendance sheet think about what I'd like support with and make sure that I arrive to that meeting feeling really calm and grounded. So I know what I need to flow in and out of those monthly networking meetings with more ease so I can do something about it right? I can plan for it! I can block out that time in my diary so that nothing else creeps in...and I like to think of that as creating a lovely protective bubble around what's important So I wonder, might you benefit from taking that approach too? And i'm going to share another quick example of the importance of giving yourself time in that way. A client that was working with a few years ago was unlike me a prolific networker

CHAPTER 03 / 4 Discussion

Client Case Study on Networking Over-Commitment and Offer Creation

A prolific networker struggled to grow her business because her calendar was entirely filled with coffee chats and social events. While these interactions were personally fulfilling, they left no room for the essential work of creating service offers and revenue-generating products. Success in business requires balancing comfortable social activities with the focused time needed for strategic growth and financial sustainability.

03:58 Going to events and having coffee with people was her happy place, so naturally she filled her diary full of those sorts of activities. And when she came to me, she was really frustrated that she never had the time to create the offers that she wanted to be putting out in the world She was chatting with all these incredible people about how she could help them but then never actually offering them anything because she didn't have the time And it took a minute for her to realise that in order to create the space, to put those missing pieces in place she would have to let go of some of those coffee chats and events. To be honest she was pretty resistant to that to start out with because she loves that side of her work and really enjoyed building those relationships but if she wasn't also protecting time to put together offers that would actually support those people and make her some money what was the point?

04:46 And I know that sounds harsh, because yes of course it's good for the soul to have those relationships in your life. But when you're running a business you do also need to be making some money! So does any of that resonate for you? Can you see areas in your life where you're over committing which is getting in the way of important activities that would really move the needle for you or are you cramming your diary so full of things that you're not giving yourself space to think create or follow up with people If so, perhaps it's time to experiment with doing things a little bit differently. So take a look at your calendar – is there anything in there that needs prep and follow-up time? Block out that time now before you forget! And if you can see that you're spending so much time doing things that feel comfortable and easy, that you're not leaving space for the uncomfortable or less fun things that are actually crucial to the success and growth of your business… Perhaps its time to change that. What might you do differently? What will become available to you? How will things be better once you change up a bit?
