About this episode

Louise Miller confronts the debilitating impact of sleep deprivation on professional performance following a disruptive daylight savings time shift. A week of 4:30 AM wake-ups culminated in a total breakdown of productivity habits by Friday, forcing a reckoning with the physical limits of the solo entrepreneur. This exhaustion triggered a cycle of mindless scrolling and reactive email management that replaced high-impact strategic work.

Sustainable productivity requires a daily audit of energy levels before engaging with digital distractions. Miller advocates for an immediate review of the to-do list at the start of the workday to facilitate intentional decision-making. This practice allows business owners to postpone non-essential tasks, schedule restorative breaks, or pivot to low-energy administrative work when physical fatigue makes deep focus impossible. By acknowledging exhaustion early, entrepreneurs can avoid the trap of hustle culture and maintain long-term momentum.

This episode of the Unfrazzle podcast offers a candid look at the human side of time management for solo business owners. Louise Miller shares her personal struggle with the snooze button and the specific moment she realized her morning routine had collapsed. Listeners are invited to join the official mailing list for ongoing guidance on maintaining a calm, focused business environment.

Impact of Sleep Deprivation on Morning Work Habits

A recent daylight savings time change resulted in a week of 4:30 AM wake-ups, leading to significant physical exhaustion by Friday. This fatigue caused a breakdown in professional habits, resulting in hours of mindless scrolling and email checking instead of following a pre-planned work schedule.

00:02 Welcome to Unfrazzle, a podcast for solo business owners with a big vision who are ready for a kinder more sustainable approach to productivity. I'm Louise Miller and each week i share bite-sized insights to help you step away from the hustle stop faffing and stay focused so you can make your brilliant ideas happen and make a bigger impact in the world So grab yourself a cuppa and let's get started It was a Friday morning and I was utterly exhausted. There had been lots going on that week, and the clocks had just changed but my body clock didn't get the memo so i'd been wide awake at around half past four every single morning And by Thursday I was feeling it and by the time Friday rolled around I was absolutely exhausted So there had been a few days

00:53 Towards the end of that week where I'd struggled to get things done, where i spent mornings at my desk and the time had drifted by in a haze of mindless scrolling email checking looking at open rates on the latest email that I sent to my mailing list basically I was doing anything apart from what I was supposed to be doing that day. At the end of every day I write down what I want to get done the following day so when I sit down to start work in the morning I can be focused straight away But that strategy only works if the first thing I do when I sit down is look at that list. And on those days where I struggled to get things done, I'm going to say that at least an hour went by before I took that list out of my desk drawer and looked at it. By the time I did look at it not only had I already wasted that first part of the day which for me is usually when I am most productive

CHAPTER 03 / 4 Discussion

Intentional Decision Making and To-Do List Management

Reviewing a daily to-do list immediately upon starting work allows for intentional decision-making regarding energy levels. Checking in early provides the opportunity to postpone non-essential tasks, schedule rest, or take a walk to boost energy rather than falling into a cycle of unproductive activity.

01:48 But because I'd fallen into a bit of a funk by that point from all of the mindless scrolling and all of the kind of pointless stuff that i was doing, it took much more of an effort to get myself out of it. And to get myself focused again...and it was really frustrating because I should know better! I know that I should look at my list the minute I sit down at my desk And I also know that when i'm already tired, as I was that week it's even more important that I use the tools that I've put in place to support me. Because at the end of the day if I had looked at my list as soon as I sat down... ...I wouldn't have wasted all that time on activities that are utterly pointless but more than that I would have been able to notice how I was feeling and make choices about how I was going to spend my day based on that. I'd have given myself an opportunity to ask myself

02:37 Which of the things I'd written on my list the night before really needed to happen that day? And, I could have chosen whether to get some rest first and come back and do those important things later. Or, I might even have looked at that list and decided everything on it could wait... ...and I might have chosen to give myself a day off so that I could get some proper rest and recharge If I'd have picked up my list at the beginning of the day and just taken that few minutes to check in with myself, maybe i would have gone out for a walk to get the blood flowing before starting work. To give myself a bit of a boost of energy you get the idea! I would have used that first part of the morning with intention and much more wisely than what I ended up doing which was just bouncing around and scrolling...and just making myself feel worse So the next time you're tired please don't do what I did
