About this episode

Louise Miller launches a new series on the Unfrazzle podcast addressing the critical challenge of membership retention for solo business owners. When members fail to implement strategies or see tangible transformations, they frequently exit communities to reclaim time and capital. This trend forces membership owners to rethink how they deliver value beyond standard resource libraries and live calls.

Secondary factors such as 9-5 employment, caregiving responsibilities, and household administration often prevent members from engaging with high-quality content. Miller argues that memberships are the first items pruned from budgets when a clear return on investment remains elusive. To combat this, the Treehouse concept offers a framework for members to step back from the forest floor of daily tasks and refocus on original business goals. These reflective conditions prove more effective than traditional accountability calls which often ignore the root causes of member inaction.

Listeners can access a free productivity assessment at louisemiller.uk/quiz to identify specific efficiency obstacles. Louise Miller also invites the community to support the show via Buy Me a Coffee to maintain these insights into sustainable productivity. This first installment sets the foundation for a three-part deep dive into member engagement and long-term retention strategies.

CHAPTER 02 / 5 Discussion

Membership Retention and the Problem of Inactive Members

A new three-part series begins focusing on the frustration of membership owners whose members show up but fail to take action. When members do not implement what they learn, they fail to see a transformation and eventually question the value of their investment. This lack of engagement often leads to members leaving the community to save time and money.

00:50 You need to listen to the next few episodes of Unfrazzle because over the next three weeks I'm going to help you solve one of the most frustrating parts of running a membership. Members who show up but don't take action, so this is going to be great for you if you run a membership or community but a lot of what i'm sharing will also be helpful if you run a group program or if ever feel frustrated with your clients aren't taking action There's also a very good chance that some of the things I'll be talking about over the next few weeks will help you to get things done too. So even if you're not a membership owner, it may still be worth a listen over the next few weeks but let's get going with part one! So you started your membership because you want to serve your community and help more people. You have something amazing to share with the world, and your membership is a really great way to get that out there but as much as you love what you've created in the community that's around it can be frustrating too can't it? You know what people should be doing to experience the transformation they came for but they're not doing it. They're not taking action on the things you know are in their best interest

01:50 Unfrazzle is a word that I use to describe people who are not learning. If your members don't take action, they won't experience the transformation that your membership can provide. They'll start questioning its value and then worst case scenario is that they will leave So in this three-part series I'm going to help you help your members take action so that they get better results stay on your membership for longer and we'll shout about how amazing you are to anyone who will listen! So i know that you've built something amazing for your members

CHAPTER 03 / 5 Discussion

Life Demands and Member Overwhelm Factors

Members often struggle to engage with content because of the competing demands of busy lives, including 9-5 jobs, family caregiving, and household administration. While membership owners provide high-quality resources and live calls, these are often just a small part of a member's daily struggle. If a member does not see a clear return on investment, the membership is frequently the first thing they "prune" from their schedule and budget.

time management· life admin· return on investment· member burnout· business owners

02:31 There's a library full of resources, maybe a curriculum or a roadmap for them to follow. You might have live calls Q&As guest experts sharing their wisdom and perhaps a community where people are sharing their wins asking for help and cheerleading each other and I know all of that has been carefully curated is packed full of value and you know that it's going to help your members get the transformation they came for but the truth is your members have very busy lives They've got their day job, whether that's a 9-5 or a business to run. And if they're running a business as we know they'll be wearing all of the hats and it can be really hard to switch off! They might be taking care of family which could be providing taxi service for their kids It could be caring for aging parents...it could be both

03:11 There's life admin to do, dentist appointments, grocery shopping, fixing stuff around the house walking the dog feeding themselves. We've got laundry cleaning sleep socializing there is a lot going on and yes your membership is in the mix for them but it's just one small part of what they're contending with day-to-day so they have really good intentions if engaging with your content and taking action to move them forward But life can get in the way and with everyone feeling the squeeze on their time, energy and money right now often people are looking for something to get rid of. Something to prune. And if they're not seeing a return on their investment then your membership may well be the thing that gets the chop! So again I just want to stress that them not getting a good ROI has nothing to do with the quality of what you're offering it's not your fault and it's not their fault either. They're not lazy

03:57 Life belifing and it's inevitable, right? So as a good-hearted values led membership owner what can you do about it. So you could choose to do nothing You could just shrug your shoulders and say on them if they're not acting on what they learn And yes in one sense that is true. You can't take responsibility for other people's actions or reactions If you know the whole...you can take a horse to water but you can't make it drink That is so true So you could just carry on taking their monthly payments hoping that they're so busy they won't notice that they're paying for something isn't actually serving them. But I know you don't want to do that because you are a good person, you care about your members and didn't start your membership just apart people from their cash regardless of the outcome

CHAPTER 04 / 5 Discussion

The Treehouse Concept for Member Reflection and Focus

The "Treehouse" concept is introduced as a method to help members pause and reflect rather than staying on the "forest floor" of daily tasks. By creating conditions that allow members to step back and refocus on their original goals, membership owners can help them achieve better results. This approach is presented as more effective than standard accountability calls, which may not address the underlying reasons for inaction.

the treehouse· episode 13· accountability· strategic planning· productivity

04:39 You want people to see results. You want them to get the transformation that they came for, so that they will see their investment is valuable and something they want to continue. It feels better for you when they're getting results doesn't it? So if your members aren't implementing and moving forward here's what you can do about it. You can create the conditions your members need to take action Remind them why they joined your membership in the first place. Get them thinking about how you can help them achieve the outcome that they want You can help put their blinkers on so that they get really laser focused on what they want to achieve which will make it easier for them to take action So I'm going to be diving into that in more detail in a future part of this series but for now, I just wanted to remind you with the concept of The Treehouse

05:23 So I first talked about that in episode 13 of this podcast, which is a long time ago now so i will pop a link in the show notes if you want to hear me talk through the whole thing. It's a really powerful image and tends to stick with people so it's worth a listen if you haven't heard me talk about that before but for now i'll just share the short version which is that when there's a lot going on and you're feeling overwhelmed or maybe a bit frazzled The most productive thing that you can do is lift yourself off the forest floor and take some time in the treehouse. Taking that pause to reflect on where you've come from, remind yourself what you want to achieve and figure out how you're going to get there... That's the best thing that you can do for yourself! It is so much more effective than staying on the forest floor wandering around in circles doing more doing. So

06:06 How can you give your members time in the treehouse and help them to pause, help them step out of their day-to-day reflect on what they want. Reflect on how things are going what's going on in their life and then choose what action they're going to take to get them where they want to go? So you might be listening to this and thinking that you are already doing that for your members, you're already giving them that time in the treehouse. And maybe you do already have regular planning calls or you're providing some sort of accountability and that is all great but in the next episode I just want to explain why those things might not be working as well as you'd hoped and what's really going on underneath so make sure you subscribe to Unfrazzle wherever you get your podcasts to make sure you don't miss part two of this three-part series and I look forward to seeing you again soon
