The origins of the Freemasons are traced back to secret construction guilds formed during the Dark Ages to build cathedrals outside of church-controlled colleges. In 1776, Adam Weishaupt founded the Illuminati at Ingolstadt University as a criminal organization that infiltrated these existing secret societies to exert influence through payoffs and violence.
