About this episode

Mike Hanson reports from the Mount Carmel site in Waco, Texas, to mark the twenty-fourth anniversary of the 1993 Branch Davidian siege. The dispatch details the initial February 28 ATF raid that claimed the lives of four federal agents and six Davidians, leading to the catastrophic fire on April 19. Hanson highlights the tragic loss of eighty-two individuals, including seventeen children and two unborn babies, during the final assault on the religious compound.

Mainstream media outlets faced criticism for their positioning during the fifty-one-day standoff while the original fifty-room complex was reduced to rubble. Today, the swimming pool remains the only significant structure left from the original gym and residential facility. A new church dedicated to the Branch Davidians was constructed on the grounds between 1999 and 2000 to replace the sanctuary destroyed in the federal operation. Survivors of the siege provide personal accounts of the events that transpired before the final conflagration.

Mike Hanson delivers a somber reflection on the physical remnants of the Waco tragedy while standing near the memorial stones. The report captures the eerie stillness of the Texas landscape where the Davidian community once thrived. This anniversary update serves as a precursor to upcoming interviews with those who lived through the 1993 fire.
