About this episode

Daniel Simon of Guadalupe Valley Services reveals critical installation failures found on most Central Texas residential roofs during a detailed inspection with Mike Hanson. Simon identifies a widespread neglect of roofing cement application on starter rows, a mistake that leaves homes vulnerable to wind uplift and water infiltration. This technical oversight by modern contractors compromises the roof deck despite the presence of standard heat-sealing tar strips on upper shingle layers.

Guadalupe Valley Services maintains a legacy in the Austin and San Antonio regions dating back to its founding in 1947 by Mike Hanson’s grandfather. The family-owned firm now services a broad corridor including Temple and Liberty Hill, focusing on manual gluing techniques that many high-volume competitors skip. Simon notes that while upper shingles utilize built-in adhesive strips, the bottom edge requires specific manual reinforcement to ensure long-term structural durability against Texas weather patterns.

Expert Daniel Simon brings nearly 40 years of field experience to the roofline, demonstrating exactly where water penetrates poorly sealed edges. Mike Hanson connects the company’s multi-generational history to their current guarantee of personal inspections for every new estimate requested through their primary service line.

CHAPTER 02 / 3 Discussion

Starter Row Installation Errors and Roofing Cement Requirements

Daniel Simon demonstrates a common installation error involving the starter row at the bottom of a roof. He explains that this layer must be secured with roofing cement to prevent wind uplift and protect the roof deck from water drainage. While upper shingle rows feature built-in tar strips for heat-sealing, the bottom edge often requires manual gluing to ensure long-term durability.

00:57 Okay, whoever did this did it incorrectly. There's two or three different ways of addressing the issue But there could be should be cement roofing cement It should be glued down where it does not blow up because they can blow off If you look at the next row, you'll see that it has a built-in tar strip that's build into the shingle. That makes it seal down I had to kind of pull on it and unzip it to break that glue strip It will reseal when it gets hot. I'm not doing any damage When it seals down and gets hot again, it'll stick right back down but the bottom edge was not glued down That's a common error we see on a lot of roofs Of course, we don't do it incorrectly We do it correctly Absolutely
