About this episode

Travis County Commissioner Karen Sonleitner secured a narrow re-election victory in Precinct 2 by approximately 1,500 votes. Addressing reports of her emotional reaction at Palmer Auditorium, Sonleitner clarified her commitment to the Democratic party despite her Republican upbringing. The victory comes amid a historically split district and intense local scrutiny over the final vote count.

Technical failures at the studio prompted suggestions for new equipment from Radio Shack while callers raised grievances regarding Capital Metro bus noise. A Leander resident challenged the $250,000 Round Mountain Road bridge project, claiming the infrastructure was misplaced following the October 17th floods. Sonleitner defended the county's septic tank policy, stating the new regulations will align with state minimums and standards set by the Lower Colorado River Authority and Hayes County to avoid unnecessary bureaucracy. Attorney Terry Keele and the environmental impact of local wastewater systems remained central to the policy debate.

Gary P. Nunn and the Derailers will headline the Broken Spoke birthday celebration on November 12th. The historic Austin venue also features Alvin Crowe and Dale Watson on the upcoming calendar. Commissioner Karen Sonleitner shared these community updates while navigating a broadcast marked by malfunctioning headphones and spontaneous listener feedback.

Karen Sonleitner Election Victory, Travis County Precinct 2

Travis County Commissioner Karen Sonleitner discusses her narrow re-election victory in Precinct 2, winning by a margin of approximately 1,500 votes. She addresses a local news report claiming she appeared visibly shaken during the returns, explaining she briefly retreated to a restroom at the Palmer Auditorium to process the emotional evening. Sonleitner notes that despite her Republican upbringing, she remains a committed Democrat in a historically split district.

01:37 How can a reporter report that somebody looks visibly shaken? You would have to confirm that before it's okay to print that unless it was a column. This is a news story! I mean, were you just shaking and crying or what? Well, it had been a real emotional evening, I'll tell ya' that at the point where it started going back and forth, back and forth, back and forth as public as I am That's not something that I wanted to endure publicly so uh...I did retreat to the Palmer Women's Bathroom Now I can tell y'all Which is going to be renovated by the way. Well, anybody that wonders why they put sofas in women's bathrooms it is so that women political candidates can go hang out there for about an hour watching the returns come in. Goofy press visibly shaken. Oh what you like midnight and your behind? What do you want to do? Go out and have a little party? Exactly well I was 140 and I was still behind so its not a pleasant evening but it all worked out. How many did you win by 1000 something votes?

02:32 1500. Which most people don't remember, Precinct 2 is a very tight precinct it's pretty evenly split between Republicans and Democrats and four years ago I only won by 2000 votes so this was more of the same. So you could be a Republican though? You really could be! My parents are Republican. Your parents are yes see I always thought of you as that until you became uh well of course when you first ran for the last term, for the county commissioner's office. There had never been a Republican it was smarter to be I guess a Democrat? Well I'm a Democrat let there be no doubt about that. Everybody in Austin is trying to pull her over. But I grew up in a Republican household Yeah but you dated a Republican once did I ever mention that? You're never going to let me

CHAPTER 02 / 5 Discussion

Technical Difficulties, Terry Keele and Capital Metro

The broadcast experiences technical issues involving a lack of functional headphones, prompting a host to suggest purchasing replacements at Radio Shack. A caller congratulates the Commissioner before complaining about Capital Metro buses using aftermarket mufflers that cause excessive noise and vibration in local neighborhoods. The conversation briefly mentions attorney Terry Keele and his past relationship with the guest.

03:16 Did Terry call to congratulate you yet? Yes he has. Alright! Hey, Terry Keele world's greatest lawyer I tried to reign him in Karen, I am trying You should have heard him with me You know I pity your daughter when she gets to dating age She is going to hear about ex-boyfriends for the rest of her life There will be no ex boyfriends You got your name coming barbecueed by them Buddy... You got it to look forward too Hello Karen Hello? Oh, she doesn't have headphones yet. We can't afford but one set of headphones. The headphones that were here! AM Session borrowed them we've only got two pair in the building Sir we can't take calls here on the number one show in Austin because an eight dollar set of headphones is not in our area I'll go by Radio Shack and buy some more where I bought these for myself Stretch this across for a moment Okay go ahead sir we've connected you to Command Central in Houston

04:07 Karen, congratulations. Thank you! If you or any of the neighbors are wondering if your house is constantly passing gas that's probably not it. You're probably on the bus route or near it. Cap Metro is buying factory second mufflers on those mid-sized buses And you have to buy the, um...the factory. I mean they're buying aftermarket mufflers. Okay! Thank you very much for sharing that with us. It's resonating. Resignating? Whoa! You went to Texas Tech didn't ya Trooper? Just talk regular Trooper we can understand it. Oh do we know this guy? Yeah This guy threatened to beat up Sammy one time

CHAPTER 03 / 5 Discussion

Leander Infrastructure, Round Mountain Road Bridge Dispute

A resident from Big Sandy Drive in Leander calls to dispute the placement of a new bridge on Round Mountain Road. The caller argues that the $250,000 bridge was built in the wrong location, claiming Big Sandy Drive required the infrastructure more urgently following recent major flooding on October 17th. Commissioner Sonleitner defends the project while acknowledging the need for additional crossings in the area.

04:55 And he said blood would be running down his hand from where he hit me in the tooth. I don't believe they're trying to save a buck by the way they spend money, I gotta feel... Alright thank you Trooper! Hello KVET Karen Sunlightner County Commissioner newly freshly elected sitting in with us actually... A comfortable margin of 1500 I'd say Yeah, I got a question for Karen Sunlightner. Hi! Uh hi...I live out in Big Sandy Drive in Leander and recently there was a new bridge put over Round Mountain out there. Mountain Knocker? Round Mountain Road which goes between Leander and Leslie Hill. That boy! Anyway, I got back from a trip from up north on the 17th the day of the big flood

05:41 And they're supposed to fix the road going across there. Of course, it was only one way in and one way out. And I was three hours getting home...I went 1200 miles to get home which is 300 feet. So enough about the past what do we need now? What do we need now? We need a bridge over Big Sandy driveway should have been in first place instead of Round Mountain because its 6 foot wide creek never has been flooded and they put the bridge in wrong place Well, the bridge was put in the right place. The question is whether there's another bridge that's needed in another place and certainly with the floods that we got a couple of weeks ago... I don't know what the bridge cost, $1 million or 2 million? No, about $250,000 dollars That's about the standard for that kind of language.

CHAPTER 04 / 5 Discussion

Travis County Septic Tank Regulations, Environmental Policy

Commissioner Karen Sonleitner addresses public concerns regarding proposed stringent septic tank restrictions in Travis County. She clarifies that the county intends to align with state minimum requirements and existing standards from Hayes County and the Lower Colorado River Authority rather than creating a new bureaucracy. The updated rules aim to balance public health protection with low-cost, infrequent inspections for existing systems.

06:34 Karen. Hey, good morning. Good morning, Karen. Congratulate her on her victory. Congratulations. Thank you. I appreciate it. Was there a purpose of this call? Yes sir Sammy! I'm calling to say that I heard you on the TV this morning talking to Imus about Kinky Friedman and you being with Kinky there. Wasn't I bragging on Bob Cole big time? Oh yes sir, you sure were. So he didn't make that up. Bob Cole sounds real nice as Well, he is real now. Did Don Imas really ask about me? What did you do this morning Sammy? What did Bob do this morning? Oh, he's just been feisty. I don't know what to do with you. Young John Tindall and I have been trying to bring him in. Sammy wearing off on me or something? Getting cocky! Getting real cocky! Hello, K-Med. Yeah, I'd like to ask Mrs. Suntliner a question. Oh miss but that's okay. Her position how she feels about how the county wants to put these new stringent septic tank orders through. I was waiting for this question to come up thank you sir thank you thank you please tell us something. When can i get some sewer oh you're not my County Commissioner

07:36 Why does Travis County allegedly want to have the toughest septic tank restrictions in the state of Texas? Well, I think where we're headed on this is that we got some rules that we put out there for the public to comment on. We have rules! No no no... I don't know. And we heard back from the public and I think we consistently heard the message from folks that have had systems that have been up and running, not causing a problem of why do you want to mess with us? Why do you wanna come inspect me every year and then charge me a fee? Right. We heard loud and clear from folks and I think the next version of the rules that are taken out into the public in the next couple weeks or so are going to reflect the state minimum requirements

08:13 plus the overlays that Hayes County and the Lower Colorado River Authority have already gotten approved by TNRCC as being thoughtful, balanced and protecting the public health. But not mandatory? Right well in terms of the reinspections are not a part of that but we'll... So if you're saying thank you Commissioner are you saying that if you already have a septic tank and you've already been approved at the way things are going now there's a good chance you won't have to endure more inspections? It's possible or it is the kind of thing that it may be a longer period of time before you have an inspection, or that the inspection is something that is extremely low cost. That Travis County would be responsible for sending the person out there to check on it

08:55 but something that is not overly... You'd all have to hire a lot of people to do this. Exactly, and that's why... Create a whole new bureaucracy Well it's something you couldn't quickly do I'm in charge of something We're going to be very thoughtful about this and i think the comments we've got from folks here are very thoughtful about Today's the day to congratulate Karen, not put her on the hot seat seat. That's important question, I didn't bring it up. Oh that's important to me too and i'm going to talk my county commissioner about it as well as where is the sewer line? Yours yours is the new Todd Baxter yeah hello sir. and I need water. Thank God, well we know that we're working on it and i want to tell Karen how much we appreciate what she's done out there in that neighborhood you know they help us out because we've been overlooked for years and she has really done her job and so glad she got re-elected. Well thank you now tell the black helicopter people that please yeah please this is the first time when Kirk Watson was here earlier
